90pc Work On River Protective Embankments Completed

MUZAFFARGARH, (Muzaffargarh.City – 18th Jul, 2017 ) : Deputy Commissioner Saif Anwar has said that 90 per cent river embankments have been fortified in the district and the remaining work would be completed soon.

All possible arrangements have almost been completed to deal with expected floods effectively. The district administration is in contact with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to monitor flood situation, he said while talking to APP, here on Tuesday.

Two rivers — Indus and Chenab — flow in the district and Muzaffargarh district is one of the most affected districts during 2010 floods. Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif had constituted a Flood Commission in 2010 to identify departments which were responsible for massive losses due to floods.

The commission had declared the Irrigation Department responsible for the losses as it had not strengthened embankments of rivers, added the deputy commissioner. He said that over 12-lakh-cusec water can flow through Taunsa Barrage in Kot Addu, and nearly 8 to 10 lakh cusecs of water could pass through the Chenab bridge.

In normal situation, over one lakh cusecs of water flows in River Chenab. The Chenab bridge separates two districts, Multan and Muzaffargarh. The DDMA, Rescue-1122, Civil Defence, Irrigation Department, Livestock Department and others have conducted exercises to work in coordination in case of any flood-like situation.

The district administration has provided required machinery to the departments so that they could cope with any emergency amicably. APP/kmr-atf-xl/rsd/kmd 17:38/18:03/18:03
